Performance Dual Head
Whats d diff. between a dual over head camshaft and single overhead camshaft? how does it effect performance?
Ok..here we go.
First, the obvious part. A dual OVC (Over Head Cam) engine has 2, or DUAL camshafts. A SOC (Single Overhead Cam) engine has 1, or a single.
Now the other stuff......The lighter the valve train is, the higher the engine can rev. That's why a 2-stroke revs so high.....they HAVE no valve train weight!
Now a SOC engine, while it has no push rods, still have rocker arms (think of the early 750 Honda 4's), to transfer the cam movement to the valves.
A DOC engine has no rocker arms. Rather, the cams drive a follower, that works directly on the ends of the valves.
Like everything in life, it's a trade-off. On the 750 Hondas, the early SOV engines' valve train weighed more, thus couldn't rev as high.
HOWEVER, the DOC, while lighter valve train=higher revs, the valves were harder to adjust, requiring a special tool (actually, a 2-piece tool. One to depress the follower, the other to hold the follower down), and a valve cover gasket replacement.
