EMT Basic Skills - Vital Signs & Sample History
What is the drill the emt's use on the legs of an emergency patient?
When the emt's show up they used a drill on my friends leg. I was wondering what it was and what it was for?
It's called an EZ-IO
http://www.vidacare.com/ez-io/index.html
It's used in critical situations when venous access cannot be established. It drills into the tibia or humerus, into the bone so medications can be given through to bone (intraosseous).
However, I have never heard of EMTs doing it. This is a paramedic skill. (I suppose there could be services that allow their EMTs to use it, but I honestly have never heard of one).
Here's a video of one doctor doing it to another:
*WARNING!!* If you don't like needles or you would NOT like to see a needle being drilled into a bone, please do NOT watch this!!
