Will I be EMT certified enough to be a paramedic when I get back?
I'll be going to basic training and AIT to be a 68w health care specialist (combat medic) for the Army National Guard. They say you get EMT certified..but is it enough of a certification to be an EMT or a Paramedic when I get back..or will i have to do additional training/certifications.
You'll be a NREMT-Basic. You will need to go to a qualified Paramedic program to challenge the NREMT-Paramedic test and become a Paramedic. You can come out working for a BLS Ambulance service or an ALS ambulance service. But, If you work for an ALS Ambulance service all you really will be doing is driving the Ambulance and assisting the Paramedic with what he/she needs.
Also the 18D course no longer requires you to become a Paramedic, Only Optional. Which doesn't apply to you anyways because as of current date, Females are still not allowed into an 18 Series MOS.

Should I become an EMT before attending a 2 year PA program?
I'm already enrolled in a four year school. After I get out I may want to go to a PA program, but most require health care experience? Would it be a good idea to get EMT certified and work for a bit to see if I like the health care field, maybe pay off some student loans, and maybe fall back on my undergrad degree if I don't like the health care field?
I worked for a 911 provider and there were several EMT's that already had there Bachelors and were trying for PA school. When it comes to hands on experience being an EMT on a 911 rig will look excellent on your application. You come in contact with all sorts of medical conditions, plus depending on your program, training can be as short as 3 weeks. Several of the EMT's I worked with were snapped up by USC, western uni, and other great schools.
