Need Help With Aneroid BP cuff w/Spymomonmeter(Sp?)?
I am in nursing school and I cannot hear a brachial artery or blood pressure reading. I can't even hear a heartbeat through my stethoscope. Can anyone offer advice or tips?
First make sure you are putting the right part of the BP cuff over the brachial artery on the arm.
Before you try to hear the heart beat with your stethoscope try to find the heart beat with your fingers. Everyone is a bit different I've learned so it's not like trying to find the radial artery or something. Just feel around a little bit until you find it, then place the end of your stethoscope right over it.
This way you know you should be able to hear something. Sometimes it is just hard to hear too. You could always watch the needle jump but I hear it's better to listen.
To find that pulse point, I have an easier time finding it by feeling on side closest to their body and just above the where the elbow bends. Try finding yours a bunch of times also. This may help. An easy way to find these tricky spots also is to put all 4 fingers over the area in which your trying to find it. you are bound to feel it this way and quickly.
