In a stethoscope, why is the volume of the tubes must be very small?
I'd think it's a matter of matching the ear aperture. If you allow the sound to expand into a tube of much greater inside diameter than the ear canal, the arriving sound intensity (i.e., power/area) will be less. Sound energy will be wasted flexing the walls instead of being directed into the ear.
