why does the doctor listen to the stomach with a stethoscope?
We listen mainly for bowel sounds, soft little gurgles that indicate normal peristalsis along the intestinal tract. A silent abdomen may indicate an ileus whereby the intestines are not moving, not a good thing. If there is diarrhea, the bowel sounds are increased, called hyperactive. When there is a partial obstruction you hear loud rushes of sound called borborygmi.
In adults you may hear the abnormal pulse of an abdominal aortic aneurysm, or a bruit indicating narrowing of an artery leading to an internal organ, usually the kidney.

Yes! I'm 33w 2d with my second little boy, my first is 3 and a half. And he just loves his baby brother. He too takes the toy stethoscope and listens to the baby, I actually have a picture of him doing it, too cute! He talks to the baby and tells him things, it's so cute. Let's just hope he keeps it up when the baby actually gets here, lol. And when we went shopping for the baby stuff (toys, etc) he said he just wanted to share with his brother. =]
