Help Please! Hell Dog?
I agreed to take in a dog from a young man who works alot of hours, as I have been looking for a dog for quite a few months . I got the dog this Saturday. The problem is that he told me "She's totally housebroken, she knows all the commands "come, sit, down, off" She is a very happy, affectionate dog, no doubt he did NOTHING but love on this dog.
This dog is not in the remotest housebroken, in the three days I have had her she has destroyed my couch, ate my very expensive medical textbook, my Bible, tore up the brand new carpet and last night ATE my extra stethoscope, got into the garbage (first day then removed that). And my resident dog HATES her.
This dog is NOTHING at all of what he told me. And I based ALL of my decisions on his word.
Is it appropriate to call him up and say "Hey you lied to me, and I can not take a dog that has THIS many problems." or take him to the pound.
The only obvious 'problem' is that you in fact have a 'young' dog. And like young children, they must be supervised when you can't keep an eye on them. When you can, teach them what you want them to do. When you can't, confine them.
So the owner wasn't up front with you about the dog's training. Chances are that with a little bit of effort, you can mold her into the dog you wanted.
First, confine her to a crate or kennel/pen area when you can't watch her. Give her good indestructible toys for amusement.
So many dogs are turned in to shelters because the owners become totally frustrated/angry when possessions are destroyed by a pup who's just doing what comes naturally in it's owners absence.
But, what parent would leave a toddler free to roam the house unsupervised? Trusting a young dog to stay safe is just as risky. By providing confinement, both your possessions and your pup will stay safe and in one piece.
2nd, establish a routine. Take pup out every hour, or at the slightest sniff of the carpet, etc. Always say 'let's go out' or some other wording you want the dog to associate with housebreaking. Show excitement and reward when pup gets it right. Be calm and quiet when she gets it wrong. When cleaning up the accidents, take them outside and place them on the ground. Let the pup observe you doing this, and when she shows interest, be sure to pet and reward her.
3rd, each time a 'prohibited' item is grabbed, chewed, etc., be consistent with a 'drop it' command, and offer an allowed toy.
4th, give resident dog and pup limited & supervised exposure until they get used to each other.
Bottom line is that pups like to stay busy, so there is no way to ensure a 'house safe' dog until they are older and the desire to explore and chew everything subsides, and gives way to a rewarding routine. For many dogs this means 3 yrs or more.
I hope you'll view your 'problems' as a challenge to be conquered, and take it head on. You may find you have a whole 'new' dog in a few weeks time. Good Luck!

Dealing with a sexually abused child?
My best friend recently passed away. I promised to take care of her 14 year old daughter. The other day I asked her if she wanted to visit her dad because he called (her parents had been divorced quite sometime) and she said no. I asked her why and she started crying. She told me that he was incredibly verbally and sexually abusive and she really didn't want to see him. She has a very serious heart condition and I have to check it with a stethoscope twice a day. I am worried that since her heart is so close to her chest if it upsets her. Now I am extra careful that I close the door when I check it and that my husband isn't in the room. Is it upsetting her? I feel bad but if I don't do it she could die. Anything else I can do?
She does have a therapist
You said that she does have a therapist...have you spoken with him/her? If possible, you should set up an appointment and ask whatever questions that you have that are bothering you. Then if necessary, have a meeting with the therapist and the doctor so that all of you will be "working from the same page." It is important for her well being that everyone is aware of what she is experiencing. Since you are now her caregiver and
guardian you need to learn as much as you can about the incident. Then contact your DCFS or DFS in your area. There is also a national abuse hotline that will forward your report to the appropriate agency. In the mean time, protect her privacy and make a special effort to make sure that she is comfortable in her new home.
Edit: You did not say how you came to have the child (custody) and not the father. Is he not the biological father?
Once you talk with the doctors, they are obligated to make a report of child sexual abuse. If you are uneasy making the report yourself...that will give you another alternative.
