Stethoscope Engine
clanking sound coming from front end of vehicle?
What could it be?
I can push the car really hard and hear absolutely nothing. I can rev it and hear nothing. When im driving it though, after about 40 miles per hour I hear a clanking. At really high speeds its there sometimes. Sometimes I can hear it below the normal sounds of the engine. This sound has been there for a long while now and ive taken it to the garage numerous times.
At one time, the guy put these stethoscope (the thing doctors use) to my ears and let me listen to the engine. HE said it was from a junk yard and I forgot what else. At another point in time he also said it could be that something is rattling when the car hits a certain speed.
I have it at the shop right now.
What do you think it could be?
My engine is saying a bearing in the engine is bad.
If you're sure its not suspension related, then I would have to go with bearings too. If it is suspension related (maybe its only when you hit bumps at this speed?) you could need balljoints. Its really a kind of thing where you need to hear it to diagnose it, sorry, haha

does the oil pump make a whining noise when reving the engine and driving?
99 jetta toook the serpentine belt off and the noise is still there, it is a constant whining noise while driving and the engine is reving, i used a stethoscope to hear the noise and it sounded loudest from the oil casing is it possible for the oil pump to be making this noise?
you probably have an issue with the timing belt / timing belt tensioner or water pump. if the oil pump where making enough noise to hear you would also have oil pressure problems. the engine in your jetta is and interference engine meaning if the timing belt breaks or slips severe engine damage will occur. have it check as soon as possible. engine noises travel around a lot using the stethoscope you are most likely hear an echo effect from the oil casing.
