Why can we hear organs through the stethoscope?

Why is it that we can hear the organs such as the heart, has it got something to do with resonance, echoes, vibrations and things like that? And what happens to the sound waves when we perform percussion (tapping), I mean are they defracted or reflected? And most importantly, also related to the above questions, why can we only hear the sound of hollow organs and not the other ones?
Ok, let me ask the question diffrently. Why do we hear only the hollow organs? So in essence how is hollow sound created in terms of sound waves? (:please don't say by tapping:)

Well, everyone else just mentioned the heart but let's not forget that stethoscopes can also be used to hear breathing so I would be surprise if you can hear the organ functioning. I've heard through a stethoscope before and tapping on it sure hurt the ears

my english doctor (1/6)

wanna read a poem i wrote without paper!?

heal the dead nurse doctor!
this place is filled
with her voice

her own distinctively useless voice
bouncing rubber-like
from wall to wall
(from white to blankness)
past the cracked window
making the door creak

(at 12 am)

i hear again
heal the dead nurse doctor!
gripping the stethoscope
till the rain is washed
clean off the ground
to his sleeve
his forehead crinkling
like soaked dead leaves

this place is filled
with her heart

her own tattered bruised heart
echoing its beat
across the narrow halls
stretching long enough
for a new nurse to walk
bearing the cross
she chooses to bear

on her head
on her sleeves
wherever it will fit
on her unstained uniform.

another stark view of emotions so superbly given.. that I am left in awe... staring blank at this page
you
are very awesome
at drawing out the pictures
at holding the emotions
showing reader how to feel again
thank you
much luck
good night
your gift
talent - curse
thanks for sharing

    DANGG!
Are you sure that's not their whole discography haha?

My favorite is by far Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict.
I learned at a young age that if I played it on repeat my dad would give into my silliest whim :)
