Stethoscope Auscultate
how would you auscultate the middle lobe on a female?
Where would you auscultate the middle lobe with a stethoscope on a female subject?
I assume that you are talking about the middle lobe of the right lung, correct?
First, if you are trying to hear the middle lobe specifically, NEVER listen on the left side, as the left lung has no middle lobe. Second, don't get hung up on the patient's gender, as the method for auscultation is the same for both men and women:
1) have the patient in a seated position, if possible.
2) have the patient lift their right arm over their head.
3) use the diaphragm of the stethoscope (tap the head lightly to make sure you aren't using the bell by accident).
The best area for listening is between the 4th and 6th intercostal spaces. These spaces are usually where the main mass of female breast tissue is located, so if you are examining a female, follow her breast tissue to where it ends in the axillary area (under her arm). This area is best for listening, just make sure that you are not listening over breast tissue or over a rib. If the patient's breasts are large and pendulous, you can still see where they end in the axilla; just don't use the entire breast as a reference. The area is the same for males; just follow a line parallel with the ground from their nipple to the axilla (unless they have a large amount of breast fat), and you are in the right area. Just make sure in both cases that you are listening closer to the front of the patient, as you cannot hear the middle lobe on the patient's back.
