Double Head Stethoscope
Why do some stethoscopes have a double-sided head?
What is each side used for? (I'm getting ready for the EMT course and shopping for my first stethoscope)
The larger side is used to pick up broader sounds, such as listening to lung sounds. Where you only need to listen for the general condition. Whereas, most people will use the smaller side for listening to heart tones and murmurs. The smaller head is... well smaller, so it will listen to a smaller area, being more accurate.
Also, the smaller side is much easier when assessing newborns and children. Placing a full sized stethoscope on a newborn who's chest is barely double the size of it, can be difficult to determine what exactly it is you're listening to.
For the job you'll be doing as an EMT, you'd be fine with just a normal one sided stethoscope. The ambulance always carries a pediatric(smaller) stethoscope in the pediatric jump bag. And I've always preferred the one sided over the two, just because the two sided ones have always broken on me. Two bells=twice the chance of breaking.
