Vet Nurse Stethoscope
Ferret with possible Splenomegaly (Enlarged Spleen)?
Recently my 3 year old ferret has lost a lot of weight despite eating and drinking normally. He acts as if he has no energy and/or no interest in playing. He would rather find a corner and sleep. He is very bony but his belly is big and round. My mother in-law who has been raising ferrets for the last 20+ years came over today to examine him with her stethoscope, thermometer and a container of duck soup. His temp and everything was fine. She felt around his stomach and told me that his spleen was enlarged. She said I need to feed him nothing but warmed duck soup and water until she takes him to her personal vet this week. What can I expect to happen to him if this is Splenomegaly. I can't find really any information on it. Can he be nursed back to health or is he dieing?
Most of the time an enlarged spleen in the ferret is of little concern. A small percentage have tumors. The vet really needs to examine him...he may have insulinoma if he is that lethargic.
