Stethoscope Pediatrician
How can you measure a someone's heartbeat with a stethoscope?
Again, it's for my 8th grade career project. I'm thinking about measuring the student's heartbeats but don't have a clue how the measurements go. What's a healthy heart beat rate range (or whatever it's called) for kids ages 8 and up?
My idea is actually to have them exercise (like jumping jacks) for a while to get to that healthy heartbeat and measure it. If it's in the range of healthiness, I'll give them a lollipop as an award.
I'm going to be a pediatrician bytheway.
1] you listen for one full minute [ eactly sixty seconds - bring a stopwatch ] and count all the beats
2] Normal range for adult RESTING heartrate is 60 to 100 beats per minute [ BPM ]
3] range for exercise varies by age, resting heartrate, etc
a] first, you must do resting heartrate for each person, then
b] you must do math for each person to find 'normal' aerobic [ exercising ] heartrate. Bring a calculator too!
c] the American College os Sports Medicine recommends your pulse reach 55 to 90% of max heart rate when you exercise.
4] how to calculate:
a] subtract your age [ say 14 ] from 220 = 206.
b] multiply by 0.55 to get 55% of your max heart rate
c] this is SLOWEST hart rate should be when you exercise
d] multiply result from '4a' by .90 to get 90% of max heart rate]
e] this is HIGHEST your heart rate should go
5] use answers from '4b' and '4d' to determine training heartrate range
6] is your teacher going to let you touch all these chests? or are you going to let the students hold stethoscope in place?
7] I would learn how to take pulses in carotid [ neck ] arteries, then
a] teach to students, and have then record it
b] then exercise for five min,
c] then record that.
d] while resting, they or you can calculate target training range, and see who hit it [ most] didn't hit in [ athletes ] and exceeded it [ out of shape people ]

Did playing 'doctor' as a child ease any fears you had when you had to be taken to see your paediatrician?
Did he/she let you play / listen with their stethoscope etc.
