Vet told me my cat has a heart murmur?
After a visit to the vets today i have been told that my cat who is 4 1/2 years old has a slight heart murmur. I was quite sad at the thought that my cat may be suffering but when i went away, i thought, hang on, when humans get their hearts tested they have an ECG scan but this vet managed to pick up this apparent condition with just a 10 second listen to his heart with the stethoscope. Im thinking if its so easy to hear, it must be really serious, so could my cat drop dead at any minute. He's still a younger cat and is always out in the garden, climbing the fence. He's not overweight and eats and sleeps normally
hi i work in a vets and slight heart murmurs are actually quite common. when you say about the ECG scan its because cats are much smaller and their hearts are easier to feel because of their size so an ECG scan would not be necessary. it is easy to hear and it took so quick because vets are used to doing it in every consultation so they are trained to look for things quickly, they have been training for 7+ years. the answer to could my cat drop dead at any minute is incredibly unlikely. your cat sounds really healthy and he is lucky to have you as an owner- you should see some of the things i see

i say that your cat seems normal and healthy so you should carry on as normal, but if you are worried phone your vet and ask them to explain your pets murmer fully to put your mind at rest. your cat sounds like he is at the peak of his life and you shouldnt be worrying, my cat has a slight heart murmur and is more adventurous and naughtier than ever before.
dont worry but if you do just phone the vet to ask to explain the heart murmur and dont feel stupid i had a person phone me up the other day to ask how many times i should feed their cat when they had had it for 4 years. thats what they are there for you and the animal, you come as a package.
