Why do doctors and barristers have so much respect?

I mean it's not really hard- all you have to do is pretend to listen and then match up the symptoms in your row of reference books behind you or consult the MIMS (for doctors).
Tis easy- what else- sticth and sew, use your stethoscope? Argue out loud in a silly wig that the someone is or is not playing by the rules?
What else is there to do? All the problems and solutions most likely to enbcounter have already been written down. If your stumped- write a referral off to the next guy who'll sort you out.
It's not exactly mind-bending problem-solving is it?

Honestly- some of the unbelievably dimmest, albeit well-moneyed, people I knew went into medicine and law- because mummy and daddy decided for them it was a good idea.

So why do we have any respect for them- most are total morons?

Not sure if we really respect them, you know they can mess up your life if they want to.
Doctor can make mistakes and a lawyer can just screw you up on purpose.
I think they are both over rated.
